Turkish Angora Cat Breed Facts & Information

If you're thinking about adopting a cat, you need to find the right breed that fits your lifestyle. Details like size, energy level, and personality can really affect not only your home but the happiness of your new cat. Doing your due diligence and researching is a great way to start off the adoption process! If you have the right kind of life for an outgoing, affectionate, and almost dog-like cat, then you might want to consider the Turkish Angora.

The Basics

The Turkish Angora is a small to a medium-sized cat with an adult male and female weighing 8-11 pounds. Life expectancy of the Turkish Angora is estimated between 12-18 years.

Turkish Angoras are great house cats and readily accept dogs and other animals, but their assertive natures often make them the "alpha" pet in the household, so be sure to have any existing pets have a meet and greet with your new feline friend.

Turkish Angora Cat Breed Facts & Information

The History

Though we don't know for sure, the Turkish Angora most likely originated in the mountainous regions of Turkey (thus the name!), where it developed an unusually soft, medium-long coat for protection against the harsh winters.

Some say it evolved from the Manul cat, a breed that can be traced as far back as 16th-century France. For many years, all longhaired cats were referred to simply as "Angoras."

In the mid-1960s, the Turkish angora became large enough to seek recognition from The Cat Fanciers Association.

The Personality

If you're a dog lover, then you may need to add a Turkish Angora to your family. These cats are elegant, finely-boned creatures with grace, energy and an outgoing personality. They are usually the first to welcome visitors into your home!

Turkish Angoras are intelligent which helps them bond well with humans. They are definitely the top pick for families looking to add a cat to their home. It's important to note that while they do love their family, they will feel separation anxiety if left alone for long periods of time. This breed is devoted to its human family and does not do well to be left alone.

The Appearance

Turkish Angoras have a soft, white, silky coat that rarely mats and requires only minimal grooming. Though recently, breeders have focused increasingly on colored cats. Most breeders recommend combing once or twice a week with a fine-toothed comb or slicker brush to remove excess hair and keep the coat looking and feeling its best.

The Angora has a long body, long, slim legs, long tail, long coat, large ears and wide eyes. It is a dainty cat, with fine bones, a slim chest, and a super soft coat that belies its hardiness.
